The Witches.

There are many witches on the Disc but three have specific relevance to the various stories. These are Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick.

Because each of these witches is very different in character I will go through each one in turn and say a little about them.

Esmerelda Weatherwax.

In the opinion of many, not least herself, the greatest witch on the Discworld......... She is nominally the village witch of Bad Ass, in the kingdom of Lancre, although for practical purposes she regards the whole kingdom - and, indeed, anywhere else she happens to be - as her rightful domain.

To say that Granny weatherwax has a powerful personality would be a huge understatement and a fatal one were she ever to hear anyone say it. Although Granny has all the characteristics of a bad witch she has always come down on the side of good however there are several people who would disagree with that analysis. Granny is a typical witch who lives in the quiet and spooky woods just outside the village. She owns a broomstick (actually it was borrowed and never given back) which is great once in the air but does take a while to get started. Granny Weatherwax is definitly the unspoken leader of the three witches.

Gytha Ogg.

Gytha Ogg was accepted by Biddy Spective as her successor to the cottage in Lancre town, where she brought to the craft of witchery an honest, earthy outlook, a non-judgemental understanding of human nature, and the ability to crack walnuts with her knees.

One of the main things you notice about Nanny Ogg is her family. Nanny has been married three times and has fifteen living children and numourous grandchildren. Nanny is probably around seventy years old with her eldest child being about twenty. The Ogg family have always been skilled in magic and iron working. The extremely short Casanunda once said she might have a bit of Dwarf in her. This was probably taken the wrong way as it was meant as a proposition not a statement on her family past.

Magrat Garlick.

In a certain light, and from a carefully chosen angle, Magrat Garlick in not unattractive. Despite her tendency to squint when thinking. She is short, thin, decently plain, well scrubbed and as flat chested as an ironing board with a couple of peas in it.

Magrat is the youngest and most inexperienced of the three Lancre witches. Non of her descendents were witches which is something of a rarity. Magrat lived for a long time in a village cottage until she married the king and became Queen to Verence II. Magrat likes to do good, she rescues small animals and helps them back to health. Magrat is usually at the brunt of Grannys jokes and snide remarks about how witching aint what is was and how the new ideas were absolute rubbish. (This kind of behaviour can be seen in any profession, things were always better the old way people say, so why did people feel the need to change them?) Nanny Ogg usually has the hard job of keeping the peace.

The witches have been involved in many stories on the disk and have travelled to various places. They usually cause havoc before getting to the bottom of what is going on and sorting it all out. (The witches are brilliant characters who have grown and developed within the Discworld series)
