Lancre
Pop. (inc. humans, trolls, dwarfs and miscellaneous): approx 500. Pop for tax purposes: 17. Imports: none, except for various minor items (rare herbs, some manufactured goods.) Exports: Iron ore and gold and people. People are Lancra's greatest export; the tiny kingdom has produced many wizards etc.

The most noticeable thing to point out about Lancra is its residents. There are not many but some of the most important characters in the Discworld books live there, these being The Witches. The place is very small and squashed on the mountain landscape. Lancra doesn't tend to need a standing army as it is virtually impossible to get into. The country is surrounded on three sides by huge mountains and on the fourth side is the Lancra gorge which is impassable except for one bridge. Lancra has recently introduced a kind of passport system by which anyone entering the country must have a piece of paper signed. This can be any piece of paper at all. Lancra has seen many goings on in the Discworld series. It has had to fend off elves which are often said to be nice creatures but definitely are not. It has also had to cope with Vampires trying to take over the country. These things were of course done with the help of the witches, while the rest of the community waited for them to finish putting things right so they could get on with their normal lives of doing nothing very much.
